    Maintaining Good Email List Hygiene

    In This Article:

List clean-up helps you to reduce email bounce rates, increase server health, and increase deliverablity. There are several ways to maintain good list hygiene.

      Deduplication

See the deduplication help topic. You can also click here for a Salsa Labs training video that will show you how to do this.

      Correct or Remove Misformatted Emails

Use a query to fine malformed emails. Click here for a Salsa Labs training video that will show you how to do this. Go to 15:00 on the video timeline.

Check out the Query and Export topic for more information about the Query tool.

Remove People Who Aren't Opening Your emails

Click here for a Salsa Labs training video that will show you how to do this. Go to 27:25 on the video timeline.

Note: Salsa does not receive email-opened "pings" from users interacting with a text-only version of the email or with the HTML version while images are blocked in their inbox. This means that Salsa will not be able to identify some people who open your email. The upshot of this limitation is that you'll want to be judicious about depending on only open rates as a measure of user engagement.

Check out the Query and Export topic for more information about the Query tool.

Create an Automate Query to See Who Is Opening Your Emails

Emails can be a little bit tricky to report on. Salsa Labs sends millions of emails per day, and each individual email creates a new database row. That makes it bandwidth-prohibitive to run a query that asks the database to analyze all of your supporters multiplied by all of their emails.

The way we've dealt with this issue is by automating a script that pulls historical email performance into a single table with a long-term count of emails opened and clicked, plus the date of the most recent open or click. You can get at that in the query tool by selecting "Email Statistics". A basic version might look like this:

These values will be null if the supporter has never opened any email, however, and a greater than/less than date analysis won't work well with null.

To get a more complete view of a segment in which you are interested, you could expand the query to incorporate people who have been on your list for a year but have no recorded opens or clicks. That would look something like this:

      Remove Unsubscribed Supporters

Click here for a Salsa Labs training video that will show you how to do this. Go to 37:20 on the video timeline.

Remove Supporters With a Low Engagement Score
