    Managing files uploaded to Salsa

      Many of Salsa's clients have asked how they can rearrange the files that are uploaded to Salsa.   This article describes how images are stored and what can, and cannot, be done with them.

      What works and doesn't work

      What works

      1. Upload files to Salsa using the Images and Files page
      2. Delete files from the Images and Files page.
      3. Create folders in the Image Browser.
      4. Upload files to folders in the Image Browser.

      What does not work

      1. Uploading files from another site using a transfer protocol (ftp, sftp, scp, rsync, etc.)
      2. Renaming files or folders in the Image Browser.
      3. Removing files from folders in the Image Browser.
      4. Removing folders in the Image Browser.
      5. Moving files to different folders in the Image Browser.
      6. Moving folders under other folders in the Image Browser.

      The Image Browser

      Salsa stores your files on disk in an area reserved for your organization or chapter.  The space where your files are stored can be viewed using the Image Browser.  The image browser is available from any What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG) editor.


      Clicking the image button displays an image dialog. The image browser appears when the Browse Server button is clicked.


      Files in the root part of the image browser (red box, below) can be managed via the Images and Files page


      The folders at the top part of the view with numbers for names were created by Salsa during template extractions.


      The number in a folder name is the template_KEY for the template that Salsa extracted.  For example, the folder labeled 13492 was created making this template.


      Clicking on a filename in the Image Browser inserts that file into the WYSIWYG editor.

      Clicking on a folder navigates to that folder.


      Changing file contents

      Many times, there will be a file that needs a tweak, but the file is in the Image Browser. For example, there may be a CSS (style) file that needs to have some spacing changed. The Image Browser can't do that because files can't be replaced.

      A great alternative is to copy the file to the Images and Files tool. That puts it in a place where you can replace it with a minimum of steps. Let's presume that you have a CSS file in a template that needs to have some modifications. (This will also work for scripts that need changes.). Here are some steps that you can use:

      Save the file to disk

      1. Locate the HTML with the file's URL.  Here are some steps you can use.
      • View the source of a page that uses the file that you need to modify.
      • Locate the URL of the file to modify.  Here's an example

      • Right-click on the URL and choose "Save Link As...".
      • Store the file on your disk.

      Modify the template that uses the file.

      1. Edit the downloaded file and save your changes.
      2. Upload the modified file to Salsa. Click here to learn now to do that.
      3. Once the file is uploaded, Salsa will provide a URL. Copy that URL.
      4. Edit the template for the page.  Click here to learn how to do that.
      5. Replace the current URL for the file  by pasting the copied URL over the current one.
      6. Save the template.
      7. Test!

      Unlike the Image Browser, files in the "Images and Files" part of Salsa can be removed and uploaded again. That means that additional changes can be made to your file as time passes.

      The only caveat is that Salsa's cache may take up to 20 minutes to recognize a change. If the change doesn't take effect immediately, then please wait a bit and try again.
