Setup and Test Your Merchant Account

    In This Article:

      Overview

      When to use it

The first step in accepting online payments is to select your Gateway Processor.  If you do not already have a gateway processor, then you'll need to contact your selected Processor and sign up for their service.

Once you've selected your Gateway Processor and/or Merchant Account, the next step is to configure a merchant gateway in Salsa.

      How to get there

First, get to the Manage Account section by clicking on the cogwheel.

From here, click on Merchant Gateways.

Click the button at the bottom of the page to add a new gateway.

      Add Merchant Accounts

Depending upon which merchant account you've selected, the process will vary slightly. Follow the instructions for your merchant account as described below.

      Democracy Engine Setup

If you are interested in setting up Democracy Engine as your gateway processor, please fill out this form and email support (at) salsalabs.com. The Salsa Support team will help set up the back end, and can get you started quickly.

If you're accepting international donations through your Democracy Engine account, you will need to add the Country field to your User Info tab on your donation page, and set it to be a required field.

      Payflow Pro Setup

Here's a graphic that summarizes how to map Payflow Pro login information to a Salsa merchant gateway.  The Payflow Pro information

      Installation steps:

      1. Select your Account Type: Select PayFlow Pro (Verisign) (even if you signed up for Payflow Pro via PayPal). Please note: Verisign will appear on your list of added merchant gateways, NOT PayFlow or PayPal.
      2. Fill in the Account Username: this is the username you use to login to your Payflow Pro account. Be sure to read the "Payflow Pro Tips", below!
      3. Fill in the Account Password: this is the password you use to login to your Payflow Pro account.
      4. Account Signature: - Leave this blank
      5. Designate the Account Partner: Type "Verisign" if you login to your account via Verisign's account manager. Type "Paypal" if you login to your account via PayPal's account manager (which will be the case for all new accounts).
      6. Select the Server information from the drop down if it's not there already: Select payflowpro.paypal.com
      7. Exclude Amex and Exclude Discover: Designate whether or not to exclude AmEx/Exclude Discover

You must check these boxes if you have not signed up for Discover and/or American Express accounts and forwarded that information to your merchant account vendor.

      8. Allow ECheck box: leave this box unchecked.
      9. Allow Express Checkout: Leave this box unchecked.
      10. Date Created and Last Modified: No settings here, just information for you on when the merchant account was set up.
      11. Require CVV2: Ensures that the field to collect credit card security codes (CVV) from supporters will be required for each transaction. You should ensure this box is checked.

Click to save the Merchant Gateway. You will now have the option to assign and use this gateway on donation pages.

      Payflow Pro Tips:

      1. The account name is never an email address.
      2. Make sure that you use the main Paypal admin user password.  The other admin passwords won't work.  (Our thanks to Lori Draper at Peace Alliance for working so hard to get this information.)
      3. If you would like to receive payments from donor's PayPal site then you must.
      • Configure your Payflow Pro account to accept Express Checkout.
      • Check the Allow Express Checkout option in the merchant gateway editor.

       Authorize.net Setup

      1. Select your gateway processor: Select Authorize.net.
      2. Fill in the Account Username: This is an alpha-numeric combination (ex: 12Ab3C4de) that is your API username.
      3. Fill in the Account Password: This is your 16-digit API Transaction key (ex: 1234567891234567).

Neither your username nor your password are the same as the username/password that you use to log into authorize.net! Instead, the API username and password are a distinct string of characters (they'll look like gibberish) that you'll need to retrieve when logged into authorize.net. Click here for pointers on locating your API settings
      4. Account Signature: - Leave blank.
      5. Designate the Account Partner: Leave blank.
      6. Select the Server information from the drop down: Select "www.authorize.net"

      11. Require CVV2: Ensures that the field to collect credit card security codes (CVV) from supporters will be required for each transaction. You should ensure this box is checked.

Click to save the Merchant Gateway. You will now have the option to assign and use this gateway on donation pages.

Your account will be in test mode upon initial setup. Make sure to take the account out of test mode when you begin using it to process donations.

*Finding your API username, password and signature is described here: http://screencast.com/t/bh5SSJ8YP

Assign your gateway to your donation pages

Once your gateway is setup you will want to point any previously created donation pages to use the gateway. Follow the instructions outlined in our Donation Page Creation section to navigate to the Amounts tab on your donation page. Once there you will find the option to select a Gateway:

      M3.png

Select the appropriate gateway and then the page.

      Test your donation page

Visit a donation page using your newly setup gateway and enter your demographic information and $2.00 or above for the donation amount.

You must test donations with amounts of $2.00 or greater. Salsa (as well as many merchants) will automatically refuse lower amounts as a security measure.

      • Credit Card Type: Choose Visa
      • Credit Card Number: Enter sixteen 1s as the credit card number. (In other words: 1111111111111111.)
      • Expiration Date: Choose an expiration date some time in the future
      • Security Code: Enter 111

Note: This will tests your donation page on our system, but completely skips the merchant gateway.

You'll eventually want to test your page with a real credit card and a small donation of $2.00 or above to ensure that everything is working properly with your processor before making your page live.

      Troubleshooting

When I test my page using all 1's it works fine, but when I use a real credit card it doesn't work. Why is this happening?

The most common problem is that there is an error with how you entered your username/password for your gateway account.

      1. Check to make sure you using the correct source of the username/password that is needed for your particular gateway
      2. Check that you've typed it correctly.

I've received successful recurring gifts, but I'm not able to view or report on those gifts.

Storing card information and processing recurring gifts happens at the gateway level; unfortunately, Salsa is only able to reflect those transactions if the gateway's API permits us to do so.

If you are using Authorize.net or YourPay/Linkpoint as your gateway the recurring information is not reported back into Salsa automatically, data about those transactions should still be available in your gateway headquarters.
